Since he is using serial upload Serial.print should output on the same port. Cheap Arduino Pro Mini clones works if powered with external supply but when in sleep mode the LDO uses some mA so if you want to use sleep mode to save power you have to desolder LDO or cut a trace.

Yes it need to be changed but you don't need software serial since you more than one hardware serial. MEGA has more than one hardware serial too!
