Limit on attachment image sizes?

Post by MGeo »

Hi,

Congrats on re-opening the forum, thank you for the efforts.

I've created a first post and attempted to upload a couple of images. Is there a file size restriction for attachments, and if so what is that limit?

Thanks,
George

IMO, 96K is fine. Large graphic files play havoc with some users and does not generally provide improved information. As a global website, STM32duino.com may be serving pages out to low bandwidth users; not everyone in the world has high-speed Internet access.

Use a utility like GIMP to resize, recompress.
Use a screenshot utility like Gnome capture to just select the screen area of interest.

You can also rehost the graphics and reference in your post.

This is the default configuration and currently, I would keep it as it is. IIWR, Roger set a smaller size (64k) so this is already higher than before.
The forumconfiguration will evolve, it's just reopen so I guess some tuning will be required. At this time, let's see how this qoes.
I'm agree with mrburnette, we should think to all people.

Ok sounds good. I get that keeping it smaller helps on bandwidth. But the world is moving in the direction of more visual content to share information and learning so I guess it is a balance.

In actual use cases here I am finding that 96K is on the small side for partial screen captures. Maybe 50% are above this limit. IMO these reference clips are very useful on forums such as this for sharing data from datasheets.

Rehosting is a bad idea IMO in that it hurts the longer term value of the forum as an information sharing tool. Many people use free photoshare accounts, where images are eventually deleted or companies cease operation (see for example https://tinypic.com/), destroying thread content in the process. We've all seen older threads in forums where the pics have long disappeared.

That said, I can work with whatever limits exist.

Best Regards,
George

i've occasionally used imgur https://imgur.com/ but i'm not sure how long the images would be retained there.
so those images may 'disappear' after a while. slighly larger sizes say < 200k would probably help, my guess is compression can mostly fit many in but there would still be many that exceed that.

i'm not too sure with https if caching and proxies still works. i've tried some svg images but found that svg images are not necessarily small even if they are compressed. the good thing with svg would be that for 'simple' diagrams with few elements size is small-moderate and it can be scaled quite large without loss of details. a trouble of course is that some schematics and board layouts are distributed as png or jpg images, and the files themselves are quite large

There are tools (pngquant, optipng, and others) that can significantly reduce the size of png files.
For instance this image: https://os.mbed.com/media/uploads/hudak ... tage01.png that most of us have seen downloads at 679565 bytes. After running it through pngquant on the next to highest compression settings, it is 88564 bytes with only a small loss of quality (the area around the boot jumper is not as clear). https://pngquant.org/
