Umm.

Must be my over zealous cache cleaning, but I have to clear the cache a lot when doing web dev to make sure everything's working OK

Thanks. I wasnt sure if on-demand or one of the other options was the best value.

Just backed up all my sites files and it totalled 2Gb, but I suspect some of those files are redundant. So storage costs on AWS would not be too costly.
I am not sure about bandwidth, I will see if HostGator have any metrics available for my current usage.

With, you setup... Do you run email as well ?

And, Which Linux do you use ? Ubuntu ?

Personally for server, I favor CentOS - but currently as I had Ubuntu on my desktop (for various other reasons), I am using Ubuntu Server on AWS :)

Just to keep you guys up to date.

I just received a rather dubious email from a partner company of the hosting company, telling me that this site contains a virus, but didnt say what it was

SiteLock, a trusted partner of HostGator, was added to your hosting package to help ensure the security of your website. During a recent scan of your website, http://www.stm32duino.com, malware that could possibly jeopardize the security of your website and your customers' data was detected. This type of infection has the potential to damage your reputation and take your website offline, so we highly encourage you to research and address this issue as soon as possible.
.... etc

This looks like a total scam to me, and will probably hasten my move away from HostGator, despite this means additional cost for me as I already paid for 1 year hosting in advance because its cheaper.

I am not sure when I will move this forum.

Probably not for a few weeks, as I need to find a new hosting company first, then sign up, then move the domains, one by one.

( what a complete pain....)

Edit.

Just found this

http://www.hermesthemes.com/scam-alert- ... extortion/

Edit 2

BTW.

I did a complete files backup of the site during the weekend and I've just run a virus scan of the files, and it didnt find anything.
As far as I can tell the uploaded attachments are just stored as uncompressed files, they just don't retain the filename (they have no extension either), just a database ID for the upload (sort of long guid)

Ars Technica did a 4 part series (it's long!) on how to setup an email server:

https://arstechnica.com/information-tec ... in-part-1/
https://arstechnica.com/information-tec ... x-dovecot/
https://arstechnica.com/business/2014/0 ... -spammers/
https://arstechnica.com/information-tec ... ing-after/

It's pretty comprehensive.

I'm using CentOS, but Ubuntu is a good choice too.

Yeah, I agree with you. Edit: from your sitelock link, apparently Dreamhost is owned by the same people that own Hostgator. That's something to consider.

Yikes

Reading those articles, email is as has as I thought. If not harder.

I think that may rule a VPS out for me.

Yeah, email can be tricky. I wonder if anyone has a system image with those steps already completed.

There are a couple of distros designed for the purpose of providing a mail server. A quick google will point you in the right direction. For example http://www.iredmail.org/ and http://deepofix.org/deepofix neither of which I know anything about I hasten to add.
