Forum SW upgrade

Post by RogerClark » Sat Jun 17, 2017 11:10 am

Guys,

I'm probably going to take the site offline tomorrow, at about 04:00 UTC on Sunday 2016/06/18 to upgrade the version of PHPBB, as its still running the old version.

This is always a rather worrying thing to do, even though I backup the DB and file, both to the server and to my local machine

Hopefully nothing noticable should change on the site, as I use an almost unmodified theme, and only change the site logo.

Cheers

Roger

one more thing i'm wondering about the forum. recently the push towards https has been growing even more. My browser is warning me when logging on on this site that it's not encrypted. Is it much work (and/or cost) for you to enable https? if not, might also be worth considering :).

My hosting gives me access to a shared SSL cert, but its complicated and the domain name for this is not the site's domain name, its something like the server name + my account name . Which in practice means its not usable for any public facing website.

I can buy a SSL per site from the hosting company (Host Gator) but that will cost me money :-(

I can get a third party cert installed for $11 per site.

But I dont know if thats compatible with what LetEncrypt generate.

Its no secret, the site is on HostGator... but recently their support got really bad

It seems not so simple
https://community.letsencrypt.org/t/how ... g/11112/13
nad seems that you have to repeat every 90 days
Since the certificate will expire in 90 days, you'll also need to be prepared to repeat this process every 90 days (or a little less) in order to get a replacement certificate
uhmmm.... maybe wil be bettere in the future.

yeah, probably not worth it yet, was just wondering if it was much effort or not.

yep. Sorry, its not an option at the moment.

I stay with HostGator because there are not too expensive for basic multi-domain hosting.
But they make their money with add-ons like the certificates.

I did contemplate moving to AWS, but the costs would be much more, as everything is metered and charged for.
Which would mean the more active the forum gets, the more expensive it is to me.

This would be a total disincentive for me to carry on, as I derive no income from the site.
No adverts, no tracking or sale of data etc.

Currently It costs me nothing extra financially, apart from the domain name, as I already had multi domain hosting with HostGator.

Update

Well, I tried to run the update but it failed :-(

There seem to be 2 methods to upgrade, and I used the one which was supposed to be the most reliable, which involved replacing most of the PHP files and folders with ones from the PBPBB 3.2 clean install.

However I immediately got an error.

Looking at the release notes for PHPBB 3.2, this does not seem to contain any security fixes or updates, it just generally enhances the functions available on the board https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=2399606

I'll give it one more try and then, need to add it to my long to do list
