For comparison, on the black pills I've just looked at, there is no pad on the PCB on the top-side for the fins to be soldered to, but the fins go through the PCB and are soldered to the inside of the hole. They fins are almost exactly flush with the holes (I think they stick out just the tiniest amount).

Naked-eye I couldn't see any solder, but under a microscope it looks like the hole is well-filled with solder around the fins.

I'm not sure why you would want a Red Pill, apart from the colour.
AFIK they are functionally equivalent to the Blue Pill

A better option now seems to be the Robot Dyn version which has a black coloured PCB, and has the correct USB pullup resistor (unlike the Blue and Red pill which both have the incorrect resistor resulting in USB connection issues for some people)
Roger, I was just interested to see how many vendors were selling these and what the quality looked like on them compared to the blue and black pills. So now it looks like the black pill from RobotDyn is the best quality one out there? I appears to have the same pinout as the BP, is that correct? That would be nice as it would give 2 different sources for these. What are your thoughts about this Black Pill vs the Baite Maple Mini clone with respect to quality and long term viability as I am still contemplating using one of these in my commercial product?

Thanks again

The one downside of the Robot Dyn black pill over the other options (black pill, red pill, PB12-LED black pill) is that you can't avoid paying shipping, so if you're ordering just one, it costs about a dollar more. If you're going for larger quantities, it's not a big deal. I do like how it exposes more pins than the PB12-LED black pills.

I ordered 4 of them and they got shipped today.

I also paid for ePacket (which worked out to be about a dollar extra on each one.

I still think they are good value, and at least I'll get them before Christmas

I ordered two of RobotDyn blacks: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/STM32F1 ... 56794.html
The shipping fee to Germany (china packet plus) is only total 40 cent extra.

BTW.

Robot Dyn will be offering 2 additional versions of this board from next week

One has our bootloader on it and I think the other version has some other firmware or bootloader pre-installed.
They did not say if the price was different

Right after 11.11, I kind of doubt it.
