Any source for project boxes for boards?

Post by HexTank » Wed Jan 04, 2017 1:45 pm

Anyone know of a online store to buy small project boxes that are just slightly bigger then all the MM and Pill boards? UK would be good but not critical.

What dimensions do you require.?

A "universal Power Bank" (£1 from poundland or... £1 from pound world ;) ) is approx 20mm x 20mm x 92mm internally and would (probably) take a MM or bluepill. They come in lsightly less than £1 on the slow boat. but do check that the mm or bluepill will fit inside.

These are also available without the charger PCB and dodgy LiPo cell if you don't particularly want the contents.. but they cost the same. My metric calibrated eye says the mm will probably fit, but I don't have a bluepill or mm to hand to confirm this with.

Other than that, you can obviously try the usual suppliers like Maplin, for project boxes but they will be more expensive.

For one off project boxes I tend to use small cliplock food containers, (and the occasional silicone pig of course) ...

... or make up boxes from laminated cardboard (using my laminator and some cardboard obviously.

Look here:
http://stores.ebay.com/MBOX-Ltd

They are located in Ankara, Turkey, not in China. This ebay store is probably related to this other direct store in some ways:
http://www.altinkaya.eu/

Not extremely cheap enclosures, but they have a large selection of models.

EDIT: Maplin ?

EDIT2: The 1551KBK (black) or 1551KGY (grey) eclosures from Hammond may contain 74 x 22.94 x 12 mm rectangular PCBs, so they are good for both MM and RP/BP (without headers!). Available from RS/Farnell/Mouser/etc

Often overlooked at the local computer store or online provider:

Often, nice aluminium enclosures are available ... I stocked up a few years ago with the transition from PATA to SATA.

I have a couple of those kicking around, gathering dust. I hadn't thought of re-purposing them as project boxes. Good idea.
A quick search of ebay for Aluminium Case turns up some more possibilities for things that could easily be re-purposed.
I wonder if you could squeeze a bluepill, small lipo, charge PCB and a display into one of these. Its pretty small, and would be a tight fit...

Great ideas guys, the pound shop specials look good if they would fit, the drive enclosure whilst on the large side might not be high enough, I may have some to test with.

Cheers. :)

Poundwold powerbank looks to be doable for the bluepill but a tight squeeze, the internal dimensions match almost exactly but you would need to snip out a few of the inside mouldings. The older Poundland powerbank I checked was about 1/2mm too small internally.

Poundland.

The Baite Maple Mini will fit in either as the PCB for that is about 18mm

I've also used a few of the waterproof cases found in the camping/hiking area of the local Walmart... these are intended for matches, cigarettes, cellphones ... anything to keep dry while boating or camping outdoors. They are in various colors, but the light blue or clear ones are great and the water seal is fairly substantial. I often find these in the surplus $1 store, but not as good of a quality.

What's the PCB like on the poundworld USB? Would be nice to utilize that as the mini usb's are crap.
