"Compatible" is a big-word.
Generally, the nano-shireds are hosted on a daughter card:

I would venture to say, "not directly plug & play" compatible.

That being said, one would expect that you could use a board schematic and identify the pins needed to connect to a STM32 board. Will take a bit of work and double-checking power, ground, and signal-levels (3.3V vs 5.0V), etc.
The versions of the Base Board L that come with the “Uno” ending accept the connection, at the bottom section, of boards that follow the connection standard of Arduino UNO. Besides Arduino UNO itself, the Arduino versions Duemilanove, Diecimila, Mega R3, Intel® Galileo and Intel® Edison Kit for Arduino are accepted, among other boards.
