STM32 ST-Link "no target connected" Error

Postby jeremyvnc » Thu Aug 06, 2015 6:04 pm

So, here I am starting to chug away on some code for the F4 Discovery and I've got uploading working. I notice a message that says something like "ST-Link version out of date" and some simple update instructions using the ST-link utility. So, I perform the update and upgrade to the latest successfully but now when I try to flash my board, this message pops up:
[code]
STM32 ST-LINK CLI v2.1.0
STM32 ST-LINK Command Line Interface

No target connected
Unable to connect to ST-LINK!
[\code]

So, I guess there is a sweet spot with the firmware and st-link utility? I have tried versions from V2.J24.S0 down to V2.J14.S0. None of these are working. I'll check that I can still flash with ST-Link manually and see if perhaps that is my problem.

Any ideas? What version of ST-Link is everyone using?

[edit]Deleted references to texane as this isn't the system being used. My mistake[/edit]

Initially, the ST-Link Utility would not connect until I chose Connect under reset in the target/settings menu. After the initial connect worked, I closed the program and unplugged the board and set the connection settings back to normal to see if it would connect again and it did. I was able to flash the board with my hex and all is well except when using the arduino IDE and the st-link CLI. The driver in the STM32Duino folder is the same as my ST-Link driver so I know it isn't a driver issue. Can someone help me with the firmware version of st-link that works with the utility?

Thanks!

[Edit]
Okay, after further digging, I thought we were using the texane utility but we are just using the ST-Link CLI. Not sure why then the utility can connect to the F4 discovery in normal mode and the CLI cannot even find the ST-Link? What is it that the ST-Link Utility is doing to connect that the CLI cannot?

Which OS are you using?

Windows 10.

I got the ST-Link CLI to work when I reflashed to V2 J15 S4.

So, I'm back in business.

We had reports some time ago that Texane Stlink does not work with all STLink hardware.
Specifically the built in STlink on some STM boards.

So I changed the repo back to using STM's own exe CLI on windows.

As far as I'm know, Texane Stlink is not actively being developed or supported, so I dont think there is much chance of the original devs enhancing / fixing it to work with all STLink hardware.

Reflashing the STLink to the binary that has escaped onto the internet is one way to do it.
You could also flash the black magic probe instead.

But, as long as you got things working, i don't suppose it matters ;-)

Hi,
For me also ST-LINK V2 is not working. Here is look.

But STlink embedded in nucleo is working.(Nucleo is used in another project).

After upgrading firmware also programmer is not working.

What software are you using that didn't work with the stlink?
Is the stlink an original or a clone?

I am using original stlink v2 programmer.
And I am using your's STM32_Arduino folder under arduino.
I am not able to flash maple mini with that.

I you use the stlink utility, is it able to connect to the target successfully?
I know that for a while we were using some other tool (I believe texane) to uploading with stlink probes, but Roger changed that to use the stlink cli tool. So I wonder if the stlink GUI fails too.

When you see the message then unplug/plugin the stlink dongle. Do not change the usb port. It may find the stlink then.
