first serous use of usb 3

Post by zmemw16 » Sun Aug 20, 2017 2:14 am

went mad, upgraded my lenovo from 1tb/8gb sshd to a 2tb/8gb sshd - certainly smoother in the vertical lines in grub surround box,
remainder of boot gets to the window manager login much faster. it seems faster in loading and running as well
CubeMX startup is now in a much fewer seconds.

knock on effect, the 1tb sshd went into the asus, then original asus hdd went into the usb 3 2.5" blue caddy.
as you can imagine a bit of file copying went on, within Midnight Commander it said 50-55Mb/sec
i triple copied my virtualbox drive directory 22gb in 7mins as i missed it ending first and second times
then did a 133gb xfer in approx 43mins, if my maths is correct that ~55Mb/s
quite impressed, i'm only get 250k/s on the wired network (3 systems starred from a single hub)

so one of my laptops is about to get a 525G ssd in a dvd replacement caddy on the asus or maybe it'll be on its own in the lenovo, there's a second external caddy, but in black to be collected from next door. that'll get ??
it's a shame the lenovo has only an external cd/dvd unit.
i could maybe upgrade the asus with its soldered 4gb + 4gb stick memory with a 8gb stick ?? lenovo would need 2 16gb sticks ...

a busy day/evening

as the asus has a cdrom with apparently power saving mode, gets turned off/on etc, its getting the 525gb ssd in a caddy. went for crucial mx300 £130
debian 9.1 firmware net install as i type

usb 1 sdcard to ssd whoosh basic installed from the stick in seconds.
i'm a convert :!:

now how much is a 1tb or a 2tb ssd :?: on amazon at least it's linear for the 275-2tb £88/132/235/462
how near is Xmas :?:

USB 3.0 is the third major version of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) standard for interfacing computers and electronic devices. Among other improvements, USB 3.0 adds the new transfer rate referred to as SuperSpeed USB (SS) that can transfer data at up to 5 Gbit/s (625 MB/s), which is about ten times as fast as the USB 2.0 standard. Manufacturers are recommended to distinguish USB 3.0 connectors from their USB 2.0 counterparts by blue color-coding of the Standard-A receptacles and plugs, and by the initials SS.
USB 3.1, released in July 2013, is the successor standard that replaces the USB 3.0 standard. USB 3.1 preserves the existing SuperSpeed USB transfer rate, now called USB 3.1 Gen 1,while defining a new transfer rate called SuperSpeed USB 10 Gbps, also called USB 3.1 Gen 2, which can transfer data at up to 10 Gbit/s (1.25 GB/s, twice the rate of USB 3.0), bringing its theoretical maximum speed on par with the first version of the Thunderbolt interface.

Are you sure? 250k/s seems too low!

<edit> 16092017
did some file copying, a 1GB (dd if=/dev/sda3 of=fred.dat bs=1M count=1024) file between my machines
best was 10.nn secs, second 12.xx secs, 22sec or 24sec using cp to a nfs mounted directory.
