New GD32F4 devices in the pipeline.

Postby simonf » Sun Aug 28, 2016 9:02 pm

If my google translation reading is correct there maybe some new F4 chips in the pipeline.

Hopefully someone will release a nice cheap dev board for it.

I wonder what the pricing will be.

At the moment the pricing of the STM32F4 makes them only viable for specialist projects.

For everything else there is no incentive to use anything more powerful than a$2 BluePill.

Hopefully they would be sub $2 for the IC if they can get the uptake in quantity. If pi zero can be produced for $5 it should be possible to make the cpu /ram part for $2. It all Economies of scale. I suspect it will be a year before we start seeing them in the street. Hopefully they will go down the same route and have the flash copied to RAM for speed.

At the moment its blue pill then jump to PI zero.

Looks like they are just making 1 device, but in a few flash / RAM sizes, then putting it out in a few dofferemt packages.
Hence they all seem to have the same number of timers etc, but some have more GPIO because they are in a larger package. I suspect the same applies to external RAM support in that its in all of the cores but not connected on some packages.

RAM and flash size variations my be a function of the manufacturing process.

I suppose in the end, it just comes down to pricing and whether anyone makes affordable / cost effective boards based on this device
