Nordic nRF52840 Preview development kit

Post by RogerClark » Tue Jan 31, 2017 10:54 pm

I got this development board last week.

Its the latest generation Bluetooth Low Energy MCU from Nordic and has so interesting features, most notably it now comes with onboard USB, and also will run from from a Lipo (as its not limited to just 3.3V)

In fact it will run from up to 5.5V USB supply, without a regulator !

https://www.nordicsemi.com/eng/Products/nRF52840

Its full BLE 5 compliant, whose main benefit is extended range operation, which is quoted as hundreds of meters, as the transmitter is more powerful than the existing BLE 4.2 devices.

Anyway, a super cool MCU in my opinion, and thanks to Sandeep Mistry, there is pretty good Arduino support for it already !

PS. These Development Kit boards, are not cheap.

But I think a sub $15 nRF52840 BluePill form factor board should definitely be possible, with USB for uploading, (but someone would need to write a USB Serial bootloder that was Arduino compatible)

Yes. Its expensive

But I'm going to speak to my contacts in China when they are back from their New Years holiday and get a quote on a nRF52840 Blue Pill ;-)

As in these look interesting, not just this preview dev kit, but the whole line.

I'm mainly using the nRF51822 at the moment, because of cost

Its slower than the STM32 as its only 16 Mhz, but has 256k flash up to 32k RAM.

I had some of these, but I've miss placed them at the moment, as they are really small

Actually, I am in contact with the company who actually makes them, (rather than the resellers on AliExpress)

(and the ones listed on AliExpress are the 128k flash / 16k ram version which are not worth using, as the BLE libraries take about 90k, so not much room for your own code
