Magnetic encoders

Postby racemaniac » Wed Feb 01, 2017 7:39 am

Fun thing that arrived for me not long ago: http://ams.com/eng/Products/Magnetic-Po ... xis/AS5600
magnetic encoders :).
Seem like great little things: cheap (20$ for 10 sets of encoder + magnet), accurate (12 bit resolution i think). The only annoyance is the precision they require to install(the magnet should be centered compared to the encoder, with a precision of 0.25mm (and max 3mm distance to the encoder). I've made a little lego setup with it (and i think i'm not making it to that precision yet), but i'm already getting pretty decent results :) (certainly 8-bit precision on my quick & dirty attempt).
compared to other encoders, i think these are a VERY good option :)

What's the intended use case?

i've some interest in making little robots & also looking into building a 3d printer :)
for such applications it's always nice to have an encoder to track what's happening (for a vehicle to make sure you're going straight, for a 3d printer to compensate for missed steps on the stepper motors).
but as often these kind of projects are on the stack of dozens of things i want to do :p. but i've done a quick tests with these encoders, and i'm liking what i'm seeing, certainly for their cheap price they're quite impressive :).

I've yet to test their PWM output, i've now read them via their analog output, but it's of course a lot more sensitive to noise than their pwm output :). a lot of experimenting left to do :).
